Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2007 . by matt

I stole the above picture from lifehacker.com, because I thought that it nicely expressed my feelings about this February 14th. Basically, I feel like a mopey emo kid standing beside an equally mopey emo kid in the rain. Holding some sort of ridiculous two-handed umbrella.

Actually, it’s not as bad as it sounds. I’m actually really enjoying myself, today. I’m not particularly sad that I am single this year on Valentine’s Day, for the first time in a while. I feel fairly empowered, truth be told, much like the aforementioned emo kids. They may look gray and gloomy but they’ve figured out that their mopey love is completely separate from a holiday that is mostly a financial boost for Hallmark and an excuse to gorge on chocolates. Their Gothic romance is built at the core on a respect for each other’s undying individuality; a desire to be together, but not co-dependent; a couple, but not a walking, talking, snogging public display of affection. Hence the two fucking umbrella handles!

Don’t get me wrong: I’m a sucker for flower and chocolates as much as the next person. It’s actually a fairly legitimate holiday, with some real history behind it. But this year I’m my own Valentine, and myself and I are going to have a quiet night at home, maybe have some dinner together a little later, and, if I’m lucky, a long soak in my new bathtub. With bubbles. And maybe even some of this. If we’re ready, of course.

Cloud Tectonics

February 12th, 2007 . by matt

I’m going to New York for the next two weeks, as I’ve mentioned, to rehearse (but not perform–we’ll actually do the show here in Charleston) a play called Cloud Tectonics. It’s an “exchange program” with the Public Theater in NYC, and I’m real excited about it. I’m not entirely sure yet the details of the exchange, but I think that the Pure Theatre here wants to align themselves with the kind of work that the Public is doing. For now it’s just that we’re working with a director; maybe at some point there will be shows actually put on in the city. I have been a fan of the Public for a long time; they’re the ones responsible for Shakespeare in the Park, and also are a part of Joe’s Pub, where lots of great music happens. And beyond that they’re known for edgy and new work.

I’ll be there from Friday until pretty much two Fridays after that, so if anyone has any recommendations as for things to do and see, I’ll take them. Luckily for me some anonymous person has been sending me Time Out New York every week (in the hopes that I might move there permanently?), so I’m fairly up on the current events, but as you know, there’s never enough time to see everything, so I’ll go by word of mouth as to what’s the best.

Heroes Sucks But I Still Kind of Like It

christopher eccleston, 99Seriously. The acting, at best, is difficult to watch (with a few exceptions, like Christopher Eccleston). The writing is almost funny at times, and there are, at least so far, so many holes in the plotlines I can’t even begin to imagine how they’re going to fill them in. And not to mention that the whole thing has been done before, in a comic book called “the X-men”. But for right now I’m kind of hooked.

I mean, come one. It’s not like ‘the Greatest American Hero’ or ‘the Six Million Dollar Man’ or even ‘the Phoenix’ were any better, right? But my brother and I ate those up, too.
