Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2007 . by matt

I stole the above picture from lifehacker.com, because I thought that it nicely expressed my feelings about this February 14th. Basically, I feel like a mopey emo kid standing beside an equally mopey emo kid in the rain. Holding some sort of ridiculous two-handed umbrella.

Actually, it’s not as bad as it sounds. I’m actually really enjoying myself, today. I’m not particularly sad that I am single this year on Valentine’s Day, for the first time in a while. I feel fairly empowered, truth be told, much like the aforementioned emo kids. They may look gray and gloomy but they’ve figured out that their mopey love is completely separate from a holiday that is mostly a financial boost for Hallmark and an excuse to gorge on chocolates. Their Gothic romance is built at the core on a respect for each other’s undying individuality; a desire to be together, but not co-dependent; a couple, but not a walking, talking, snogging public display of affection. Hence the two fucking umbrella handles!

Don’t get me wrong: I’m a sucker for flower and chocolates as much as the next person. It’s actually a fairly legitimate holiday, with some real history behind it. But this year I’m my own Valentine, and myself and I are going to have a quiet night at home, maybe have some dinner together a little later, and, if I’m lucky, a long soak in my new bathtub. With bubbles. And maybe even some of this. If we’re ready, of course.

    Hey Matt!

    Happy valentine’s day!

Why I’m mopey tonight too: I’ll be studying all night for a test on Friday. Fun!

    Byes,

I’m also having fun being my own Valentine and reading about various extremely interesting ways to die of various electolyte and metabolic disturbances and diseases! My exam is tomorrow. Tea and chocolate is what keeps me going tonight.

Yes Rab McMomo, if one can’t gorge on chocolate, one can at least bathe in it.

I still say the best thing about V-Day is the sale stuff the day after.

    Especially at Starbucks. Whoo!

I got to celebrate my 21st birthday on valentines day this year….unfortunately, I’m in Iraq. But like you, i actually had a good day this year, even though the boyfriend is back in the states and i didn’t get to drink AT ALL. At least I got “the birthday song” sung to me. You rock matt

my now married sister and her husband both agree that v-day is a day of extortion from the greeting card & floral companies…so they protested it by getting engaged on valentines day 4 years ago! i guess you have to know them to understand their “inside joke”. to the rest of the world, it was “aaawwwwww”.
didn’t v-day also include “vagina monologues” day? i haven’t seen any listings of performances this year…
