The “Blue” Bar

For some reason lately I’ve been visited by memories of this tiny bar, on this tiny beach, on a tiny island off the coast of Sardinia. Jump played there on a Naval base to cheer the sailors that were about to embark on a five-year (and counting) war that didn’t (and still doesn’t) really mean anything. We heard a lot of stories from the newer recruits about how incredibly miserable they were–already– but in La Maddalena it was pretty magical.

It’s the most relaxed I remember being, ever. And it was five years ago. And I haven’t been out of this country since. That means that a) I should find new ways to relax or b) I need to go on a trip abroad.

Many thanks to my cousin Mike for sending proof that the bar was only partly blue, and for taking all the pictures in the first place.

It’s a misconception that artists are irresponsible. Photo proof that recycling might possibly happen someday! In the meantime, it makes a beautiful centerpiece, don’t you think?

The S@#t I’ve Been Up To

May 12th, 2007 . by matt

Yeah. I’ve been working at a ridiculous pace, recently. Kiki is always a bigger project than I would ever imagine, such an undertaking. Even when we’re trying to take it easy. Which we never do. So there are two short movies…no, three, actually…that are attached to the upcoming Thursday. That I think I’ve finally finished. Last night. An an unbelievable hour. Here’s one, that is going to be featured on the charlestoncitypaper.com website in a few days, hawking their annual Spoleto Festival Podcast.

And speaking of which, I also said “yes” to opening our apartment this Spoleto to the actual recording of said podcast. Which means that all manner of artists and Spoleto royalty are going to be in the studio/office/exercise room at Fishburne Street in the next few weeks. I have to be honest. I basically agreed to this because there might be a tiny bit of money involved and because there might be a tiny chance that Patrick Sharbaugh, editor of the paper and person in charge of the ‘cast, could get Philip Glass to come in for an interview. Now, I know there are no promises. But seeing that Mr. Glass is one of my heroes, and his Einstein on the Beach pretty much changed the direction of my musical tastes in high school (from baroque-only snob to minimalist composition lover), the chance to have him here in my apartment was a big argument for doing it.

So I said yes to this small chance, and yes to the schedule that ensued, and even…”yes” to creating the intro for Patrick’s podcast. Which was the reason I was up so late last night. I wrote a little rhyme for him. Patrick’s pen name is “the Lowbrow”, so I got on the mic and spun a little couplet, like the good old days. Any of you, then, that have for some reason been missing the nasal dulcet tones of M. Bivins formerly of jump, little children, this is as close as you’re going to get to a new piece of music from me for a little while. It’s not much…but it’ll tag every one of the City Paper Spoleto Buzz podcasts, so if you’re into them, which you should be, you’ll get to hear the ditty quite a bit.

I’m going to take a lunch break, now. And then learn a new song for Kiki, a beautiful song that some of you Biv fans might remember, that Biv himself has adapted for this show. I’m very excited to be singing it. I’m very excited about this whole damned show. Y’all better be there, one of the nights. Or my feelings will be officially hurt. Just saying.
